Renting an RV for the First Time Near Philadelphia: What to Expect

Thinking about renting an RV for the first time near Philadelphia? You may already be picturing campground mornings, family road trips, and the freedom to bring your home base along. The next question is usually: how does it actually work?

At NomadsRV, we help first-time renters get comfortable before they leave. We’re a family-owned rental business based just outside Philadelphia, serving travelers planning adventures from the Philadelphia area. Here’s what to expect, from choosing a vehicle to bringing it back.

1. Choose the vehicle that fits your trip

Start with the people traveling and the way you want to camp. Sleeping space matters, but so do driving comfort, bathroom access, storage, and your campground plans. A bigger vehicle isn’t automatically a better fit.

Camper van: Our Winnebago Solis 59PX is an option for travelers who want a compact camping setup. Ask about its sleeping arrangement and onboard amenities to make sure they suit your group.

Motorhome: Our Jayco Seneca Super C offers a more spacious setup for travelers who want additional room. Think about whether you’ll be comfortable maneuvering a larger vehicle and whether your campsite can accommodate it.

Jeep with a rooftop tent: Our Jeep Renegade Overlander offers a different camping experience. It’s a good option to explore if you like outdoor living and tent camping. Ask how the tent works and what equipment is included before reserving.

You can check rental availability here. If you’re unsure which vehicle fits, contact Willie with your group size, dates, and destination.

2. Keep your first itinerary manageable

For a first rental, a nearby campground and a relaxed schedule can make the experience easier. Give yourself time to learn the vehicle, settle into your campsite, and enjoy the trip. Packing every day with long drives can turn a vacation into a checklist.

Reserve your campsite separately and confirm that it fits the vehicle you’re renting. Ask the campground about site dimensions, hookups, arrival hours, and pet rules. A rental reservation doesn’t include a campsite unless that is specifically arranged.

Also consider how you’ll get around after setting up. Will you walk or bike within the campground? Will you need transportation for outings? Planning this ahead of time helps you choose the right vehicle and location.

3. Understand your reservation before booking

Before you confirm, review the total quote and rental agreement. Ask what is included, what is optional, and what you’ll need to handle during the trip and before return.

Useful questions include: What mileage allowance applies to this vehicle? What are the fuel and waste-tank return requirements? How do the security deposit and protection options work? Are there pet charges or optional equipment costs? What are the cancellation terms?

Use our rental FAQs as a starting point, then confirm the terms for your specific vehicle and dates. Your reservation documents are the place to check the details that apply to your trip.

4. Expect a walkthrough at pickup

You don’t need to arrive knowing how every RV system works. NomadsRV provides walkthroughs and video tutorials to help you understand your rental. Take your time, ask questions, and make sure everyone who will operate the vehicle understands the essentials.

Depending on the vehicle, your orientation may include the sleeping setup, kitchen equipment, bathroom, water and electrical connections, and campground setup. Ask to see the steps you’ll need at arrival and departure, and keep the tutorial links easy to find on your phone.

We offer flexible pickup and return times, including Sundays. Coordinate your timing with us in advance so your plans and the handover arrangements line up.

5. Get comfortable before the longer drive

An unfamiliar rental can feel different from your everyday car. Before heading out, review the vehicle’s dimensions and operating instructions with us. Plan a suitable route and allow extra time for travel and parking.

If you’re considering a motorhome, our beginner’s guide to driving a Class C RV is a useful introduction. Your pickup walkthrough will cover the vehicle you actually rent.

6. Pack for the trip, not your entire house

NomadsRV rentals come equipped with camping essentials and kitchenware. Before packing, confirm the current inventory for your chosen vehicle, including bedding, towels, cooking supplies, and any optional gear.

Focus on personal items: clothing for the weather, toiletries, medications, food, phone chargers, and activities for downtime. Bring your campground confirmation and keep your rental instructions accessible. If you’re traveling with a pet, pack its usual food, leash, bedding, and cleanup supplies, and check the campground’s rules.

Soft bags can be easier to store than large suitcases. Leave some room for groceries and keep frequently used items easy to reach.

7. Ask for help during your trip

First trips come with questions. That’s normal. NomadsRV offers 24/7 trip support, so keep our contact information handy. If something isn’t working as expected, contact us rather than spending your vacation guessing at a fix.

The walkthrough videos are also useful once you reach the campground. Reviewing a step when you’re actually setting up can make it much easier to remember.

8. Plan your return before the last morning

Check your return instructions before the trip begins and revisit them before your final travel day. Allow time for the agreed fuel, waste-tank, and housekeeping requirements, as applicable to your vehicle. Confirm your return timing with us and let us know about any issues that came up.

A little planning keeps the final morning relaxed and gives you more time to enjoy the trip.
